Nature and beer intersect in Lanark County wilderness retreat and brewery experience

If you love both beer and the outdoors, you’re in luck. Cartwright Springs Brewery has partnered with the Canadian cabin builder, Cabinscape, to create a wilderness getaway experience where you can rent a tiny cabin in the woods and combine two of your favourite things, nature and beer.

Located only a five-minute walk from the village of Pakenham, Cabinscape’s Joni Cabin is a minimalist, open-concept cabin tucked away in the midst of a quiet, woodland setting. This rustic cabin sits on Cartwright Springs’ 77-acre wilderness property, and is a study in both design and function.

Beautiful, untouched nature trails wind through Cartwright Springs’ property, encouraging visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. At Joni Cabin, you can also bring the outdoors indoors as you fall asleep to the sounds of a nearby brook; spend your days embracing the beauty of nature and your evenings gazing at the stars.

Joni Cabin sleeps three, is solar-powered, and comes equipped with an indoor washroom, kitchen, outdoor shower, fire pit, and balcony for a fantastic relaxing retreat amidst the pristine flora and fauna of Lanark County. Fresh, artesian well water will keep you refreshed during your stay but if you’re thirsting for something a little stronger, Cartwright Springs Brewery is only a 400-metre walk away, where owner, Andre Rieux, is happy to set you up with a brew (or two), along with a brewery tour.

At Cartwright Springs, visitors can savour several different styles of beer, all made with the fresh, artesian well water for which the brewery is named. Selections range from a refreshing Spruce Tip IPA, to flavourful Kinburn Honey Lager, Crème Caramale, Pakenham Bitter, I’d Tap That (Pilsner), Smash, and of course, the famous Maple Porter, brewed using only maple sap for a complex (and sweet) flavour.

In nearby Pakenham, Joni Cabin guests can explore the historic Five-Span Stone Bridge and St. Peter Celestine Church, two of the Seven Wonders of Lanark County. A must-see is the Pakenham General Store, a cute, old-fashioned store that has been operating as a general store for more than 175 years. For a sweet treat, try the Pakenham General Store’s famous cinnamon buns, or make the short walk to Scoops Ice Cream for a delicious ice cream treat.

Bookings for Joni Cabin can be made through the Cabinscape website, at At checkout, guests can complete their getaway experience by adding a Cartwright Springs brewery tour to their booking, for a minimal fee.
