Immortalizing a Music Icon: Stompin’ Tom in Carleton Place, Ontario

Carleton Place is developing a knack for depicting iconic figures on its buildings! Shortly after the death of Stompin’ Tom Connors in March 2013, area artist Shaun McInnis got busy and painted a giant mural of the iconic Canadian singer. The image can be found on the former Mississippi Hotel downtown, where Connors wrote his classic “Big Joe Mufferaw,” about the Ottawa Valley folk hero, which features the lyrics: “Everyone will tell ya around Carleton Place the Mississippi dripped off of Big Joe’s face.” Stompin’ Tom has some interesting links to the town, particularly to the Mississippi Hotel.
